Maaari nang mabili sa merkado ang moisture meter na ginawa ng Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).

Dinebelop ang aparato na ito sa pakikipagtulungan sa DOST- Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) at YONGDEN Technology na pinondohan ng DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).  

Ang moisture meter na dinebelop ng DOST-FPRDI ay isang maliit na aparatong kayang sukatin kung ilan ang dami ng tubig na nasa loob ng bamboo at non-timber forest products. Ito ay dinisensyo para maging akma sa iba’t ibang species ng bamboo na mayroon sa bansa kagaya ng kawayan tinik (Bambusa blumeana J. A. & J. H. Schultes.); giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper (Schultes f.) Backer ex Heyne); at botong (Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro).

Kaya rin nitong sukating ang moisture content (MC) ng bakbak (pinakatakip ng kanluban ng dahon sa tangkay ng abaca) at ng baging. 

“Knowing the moisture content is crucial in maintaining the quality of bamboo products. Raw materials must have the same moisture content prior to gluing and finishing to ensure that the final product will not crack or split,” paliwanag ni Dr. Marina A. Alipon, project leader.

Binigyang-diin ni Dr. Alipon ang importansya ng pag-alam sa tamang sukat ng MC upang mabawasan ang potensyal na pagkasira dulot ng insekto at fungus. Bukod pa rito, ipinaliwanag din ni Dr. Alipon na mahalagang mapanatili ang tamang lebel ng moisture sa mga produktong ineeksport.

“For exported local bamboo products to perform well, their MC must approximate those prevailing in the country of destination, otherwise the material will distort, shrink, or crack while in service. The fastest and most convenient way to determine the MC is thru the use of a moisture meter,” dagdag ni Dr. Alipon.

Binuo at dinebelop ng DOST-FPRDI ang moisture meter gamit ang mga local na kagamitan at ito ay nagkakahalaga nang PhP 6,500.00—mas mura kaysa sa ibang moisture meter na mabibili sa merkado.
