Dr. Franz Asunta de Leon, an associate professor from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute of the University of the Philippines Diliman, was appointed as the new director of the Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI).
Dr. de Leon replaced now Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) Director General Joel Joseph Marciano. He took his oath in front of DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña and DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara on 15 April 2021 at the DOST-ASTI Office in Diliman, Quezon City. He will be the ninth director to take the role at the DOST-ASTI.

This initiative is in line with DOST-IX Halal S&T program that aims to help boost Halal Industry in the region by enabling more competent human resources in Halal. DOST-IX also provides assistance to Halal producers on upgrading their facility and improving their productivity through SETUP. Other assistance provided by the agency includes access to Halal Verification Laboratory, technical consultancy on Halal audit, and Halal awareness training, among others.

The Department of Science and Technology Region XI, together with the Davao City community of innovators, inventors, startups, and technopreneurs, welcomes the approval of the landmark ordinance establishing the Davao City Inventions and Innovations Center (DCIIC) during the 14th Regular Session of the 19th City Council of Davao on April 13, 2021.
