Sample currency base paper from combining abaca, salago and mangium

After decades of depending on imported fibers, the Philippines may soon be able to make its own paper money using locally available plant materials. This, as researchers at the DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) recently developed quality currency base paper (cbp) from combining the fibers of abaca (Musa textilis), salago (Wikstroemia spp.) and mangium (Acacia mangium).

Responding to the need for more personal protective equipment (PPE) amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the DOST- Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) produced bamboo-framed face shields for distribution to frontline services in Laguna.

They are victims of the Marawi siege. They are professionals- mostly teachers. But they lost their homes, families, relatives and livelihood during the siege. They saw hope when Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) granted them scholarships to pursue graduate studies at the Mindanao State University in Marawi (MSU-Marawi) and MSU Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). During this COVID-19 crisis, they feel it’s their turn to give back.
