“It has been a dream, until towards the end of 2012, when PTRI has finally developed a textile material that is comfortable, breathable but surprisingly water repellent and even anti-microbial,” revealed Dr. Carlos C. Tomboc, director of Philippine Textile Research Institute, an agency of the Department of Science and Technology.

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) recently named the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) and Visayas State University (VSU) as Tuklas Lunas (literally, cure discovery) Centers.
Tuklas Lunas Centers will serve as hubs of natural products research for drug development. Last year, DOST-PCHRD named the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) as its first Tuklas Lunas Center to serve the Mindanao area.

The Philippines and Spain recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the field of Information and communications technology (ICT). Representing the Philippines in the signing ceremony was Department of Science and Technology’s Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) Executive Director Louis Casambre, while representing the State Secretariat for Telecommunications and the Information Society of the Ministry of Industry , Energy and Tourism of the Kingdom of Spain was Ambassador Jorge Domeq.
The two countries agreed to cooperate on ICT areas such as spectrum management, cybersecurity, capacity building, disaster risk reduction, and bridging the digital divide. This will be done through the exchange of IT experts and consultants, as well as exchange of best practices and experiences in ICT policy aimed to promote economic and social development.
