Davao, a bustling metropolitan city in Mindanao, is a central hub of business activity with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) setting up the Davao Food Processing Innovation Center (FPIC), a facility aimed at helping micro, small and medium entrepreneurs (MSMEs) improve their productivity and market competitiveness.

The FPIC is a DOST initiative that provides technical assistance in product development, food processing, packaging, and labeling; and financial assistance for capital outlay in purchasing modern machineries and for operation.

DAVAO, Philippines -- Afterextensive research and development, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has come up with an environment friendly process for extracting gold and coppersans the use of toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide.

This technology uses the so-called “enhanced gravity concentration-flotation-extraction” process and uses an integrated tailings disposal and treatment system. This method assures that waste materials that are disposed in the environment are safe and considered as non-pollutant.

In compliance to RA 10028 or the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009, the Department of Health-National Capital Region awarded the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), the certification as “Mother-baby Friendly Workplace” early this year. FNRI is the first DOST agency to be awarded with said certification which is valid for two years.

A “mother-baby friendly workplace” certification means that FNRI ensures the promotion and practice of breastfeeding by providing healthy and safe working conditions for women through the establishment of a lactation station or facility.
